OPPO almost has its own processor ready: its 2024 smartphones will use its first home-developed chipset, according to a report

The leaker adds that OPPO has a chip development team of “thousands of people”, and has achieved the development of its own processors. In this way, it joins companies like Google that recently entered the field of research and development of their own processors.

OPPO reports developing its own processors are not new. In 2021, its first chipset was first reported to be in development and ready in 2023, and then it was also said to be in the process of developing 5G modems “so as not to be the next Huawei.”

OPPO will use its own processor in its 2024 smartphones, reports leaker @UniverseIce, a Twitter figure with a record of mostly accurate leaks. According to him, OPPO has almost completed the development of its first chipset and will start using it in a couple of years.

Shortly after, also in 2021, another Nikkei report mentioned that OPPO’s first own chipset would be ready in 2023 or 2024 and that it would be manufactured in TSMC’s 3nm process. This is a very important detail, since just a few days ago, TSMC actually began production of 3nm chipsets. So, the information now shared by @UniverseIce, together with the Nikkei report, suggests that 2024 will definitely be the year of OPPO’s first chipset.

Also, if the information is true, OPPO will enter the processor market through the front door, on a par with its competitors.

Qualcomm and MediaTek currently use TSMC’s 4nm process for their flagship SoCs, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Dimensity 9200, respectively. Apple also uses the 4nm process in its A16 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. It is likely that next year all these manufacturers will make the jump to the new 3nm process from TSMC (in fact Apple before the others), but it means that OPPO will be on a level playing field, at least technically, with its first chipset, and therefore, their smartphones too.

Finally, OPPO is no stranger to component development. At INNO Day 2021 it presented MariSilicon X, its NPU for photo processing, and at this year’s edition it revealed MariSilicon Y, its chip for high-quality wireless audio.
